How to end racism!
[audio mp3="http://joanjack.life/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/ending-racism.mp3"][/audio]We are all the same. We are all human. I don't see colour - I just see people. These are things I've heard all my life from the well-meaning Canadians that are either in my close circle of friends or just people I run into at airports as I travel. What is so frustrating to me is that I understand what they mean when they say those things to me. What they mean is - is that they don't see themselves as racist. What they mean is - is that they see themselves as good and nice people.Racist people are not all bad because 98% of racism is born out of ignorance, not malice. Ok, maybe I was a bit generous there - maybe 60% of racism is born out of ignorance and not malice!I know because I'm racist. I don't have many friends outside my social and cultural circle and, as a consequence, when I meet new people, I'm probably taking all kinds of racist action out of my ignorance. So, what I need from you, if you are different than me, is the opportunity to learn how it is that you'd like me to treat you and if I can, I will - ending racism is that simple.Ending racism requires a willingness to actually be in "relationships" with each other. Relationships that are fluid, growing and changing all the time, which, by the way, is the essence of life!I once asked one of my sister-in-laws how we could end racism here in our little town and she said "This week you come to my house with all your kids and I'll cook for you and you'll tell me "Yum. That's good". And, next week I'll come to your house with all my kids and you'll cook for me and I'll say "Yum, that's good". Soon, we will be laughing and we will be friends."Some solutions are too simple. Ending racism requires we all open our hearts because we are all human!I'm going to be blogging often about my rich and wonderful life and how I experience being in this body!
